The clinical effect of the Cimetidine (Tagame^(t¢ç)) in the treatment of acute gastritis

Abstract
The therapeutic efficacy of Cimetidine and conventional antacid was evaluated in 57 patients with endoscopically diagnosed acute gastritis. All cases observed were divided into two groups, namely the first group, 31 cases were prescribed Cimetidine alone, and the second control group, 26 cases were treated with conventional antacid.
Cimetidine treated group was given the Cimetidine 400mg b.i.d. orally at breakfast and bedtime
Symptomatic and endoscopic responses were evaluated at the 1st week and the 2nd week after beginning of the treatment.
The following results were obtained.
1) The highest age incidence was 4th decade and male to female was 2.2: 1.
2) The frequency of causes were drug in 36. 8%, alcohol in 22. 8%, food in 19. 3%, unknown cause in 15.8% and others in 5.3%.
3) The main symptoms of acute gastritis were epigastric pain (93.5%), after meal heaviness(83. 9%), nausea(74.2%)and indigestion (61.3%) in order of their frequency.
4) In the group of Cimetidine treatment epigastric pain was subsided in 65. 5% after 1 week, in 82.8% after 2 week, but in the group of antacid treatment in 52.2% after 1 week, 73.9% after 2 week respectively. Also the other symptoms improved more rapidly in Cimetidine group than the control group.
5) Healing rate of the acute gastric mucosal lesion endoscopically after 2 weeks of treatment was 83.3% in Cimetidine treated group and 69.6% in antacid treated group.
6) Untoward side effects were noted in 3 cases, 1 case of dryness of mouth, 1 case of constipation and 1 case of loss of appetite. However, these symptoms were not severe enough to discontinue the medication. In conclusion, Cimetidine appeared to be effective and safe for the short-term treatment of acute gastritis.
